AMISTAD
Directed by Steven Spielberg
Amistad is a very important film, especially for American's today. The story (in case you haven't
heard) is based on the actual events of a Spanish slave trade ship that was overtaken by the slaves who
were on-board. They took the ship and killed nearly the whole crew. Then they landed in America and
had to go to trial. This movie showed us the horrible conditions that the slaves were put through, and would
have to make just about anyone realize how wrong and horrible slavery was. It also showed that it was not
just the white man who was to blame. Another african tribe captured these tribesmen and sold
them to the Spanish slave traders. It also showed how many white Americans were willing to (and did) go to
war over the slavery issue. This movie was very emotional, especially the very happy, then sad ending. All because
of evil, selfish men. Want to know my stand on the issue? Well, it's kinda like this. I think that
slavery was and is a horrible thing, as is anything that takes away our freedom. All throughout the history of
human existence we hear stories of slavery all over the world. It's not a black/white thing, it's a good vs evil
thing. I don't know what I would have done had I lived in those days, but everything in me tells me that I
would have been against it. Now here's the real question. If the shoes were reversed, I mean, if black men had
been born into a world where white slavery was acceptable, would they fight against it? Ignorance is not the same
as cruelty. Think about it.
